Hammer on lick with slides

I'm not able to tell any difference in sound between a slide and hammer on from one fret to the very next fret Very distinct difference from fret 2 to 4 or 5 sure Granted my banjo is old and not the best to begin with but does it really matter whether you choose a hammer-on or slide on a fret 2 to 3?
