After 36 years as a full-time reporter at the Chicago Tribune , I retired in to teach journalism at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. This movie is based on the book by Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, who won a Pulitzer Prize for the Post in for their stories about the political scandal known as Watergate. The film, starring Robert Redford as Woodward and Dustin Hoffman as Bernstein, accurately portrays how investigative reporters comport themselves, ask questions, conduct interviews, even the unobtrusive way they hold a notebook. What most intrigued the students, however, were the secret meetings between the Woodward character and a high-level government official, played by Hal Holbrook, that the book referred to only as Deep Throat. Deep Throat met with Woodward seven times between September and May to help the two reporters break several stories about the involvement of Nixon administration officials in the June 17, , burglary of the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate office-apartment-hotel complex in Northwest Washington. The burglars, who were seeking information that could be used against Democrats in the upcoming elections, were indicted later for conspiracy, burglary, wiretapping and planting secret listening devices.

After , American pop culture was never the same again. Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato, who wrote, produced and directed, have made an entertaining and culturally significant work that suffers from some structural and other flaws. However, for anyone who has lived through the s, arguably one of the most tumultuous decades in American, Inside Deep Throat is a must-see documentary, the kind of film whose social and political dimensions outweighs and goes far beyond artistic merits. Both the film and the new documentary raise such important issues as artistic freedom and censorship, and morality, sexuality and pornography, politics, cinema and pop culture, and many other hot-button themes. And the timing for such a film could not have been better, since the cultural wars, begun in the s and s, are very much part of the contemporary moral, artistic, and political climate.
Deep Throat is a American pornographic film that was at the forefront of the Golden Age of Porn — One of the first pornographic films to feature a plot, character development, and relatively high production values, Deep Throat earned mainstream attention and launched the "porno chic" trend, even though the film was banned in some jurisdictions and was the subject of obscenity trials. Lovelace later wrote that she was coerced and sexually assaulted during the production, and that the film is genuine rape pornography.
